Nonviolence in Theory and Practice
Description
What does it mean to use "nonviolence" as a political force to raise consciousness and change unjust social structures? Using the examples of Martin Luther King & the Civil Rights Movement, Mohandas Gandhi & India’s independence movement, Archbishop Oscar Romero and the struggles of the Salvadoran people, as well as the teachings and actions of Jesus of Nazareth, this EFJ Traveling Classroom event explores the principles of nonviolence in action by exploring the following questions:
- What are the principles of nonviolence?
- How has nonviolence been used historically?
- Is nonviolence different from pacifism?
- How is nonviolence being applied to current social injustices?
- What are the implications of proactively choosing nonviolence?
This interactive multi-media presentation includes slide shows, role-playing and a Question-Answer period. It can be modified according to the knowledge and experience of audience members, as well as focused on issues particularly important to the host community or campus.
