Liberation Theology: Speaking Truth from the Margins Description
With an ever-increasing divide between the rich
and the poor (or the "have's" and the
"have-nots"), it is imperative that students
re-examine the "theology of the margins"
that gained so much attention in the 70’s
and 80’s for its analysis of unjust social
and economic structures. Drawing particularly on
the work of James Cone, Jon Sobrino, Gustavo Gutierrez,
Robert McAfee Brown, Rosemary Radford Ruether, Delores
Williams, and Martin Luther King, Jr. key
contributors to the tradition of Liberation Theology
in the Western Hemisphere EFJ co-Directors
Leslie Kretzu and Jim Keady use this EFJ Traveling
Classroom event to explore Christianity through
the eyes of the poorest and most vulnerable members
of our global society. Using the issues of economic
injustice and racism, the following questions will
be explored:
- Who are the people on the margins of our society? Who are the people in the mainstream?
- What are the differences in experience & perspective from the margins and the mainstream?
- How do the Scriptures sound different from these two perspectives?
- Are Christians called to take sides?
- What are the implications of "opting for the poor?"
This interactive multi-media presentation includes slide shows, role-playing and a Question-Answer period. It can be modified according to the knowledge and experience of audience members, as well as focused on issues particularly important to the host community or campus.
