About the Events
Educating for Justice develops and presents dynamic
interactive multi-media events on a range of social
justice-related issues. These "Traveling Classrooms,"
conducted by EFJ co-Directors, Leslie Kretzu and
Jim Keady, have been produced for more than 300
universities, high schools, community groups and
conferences in the past 7 years.
The events are structured to include the following format/methodology:
- A "Virtual" Immersion Experience
- Social Analysis
- Theological and/or Humanist Reflection
- Planning and Motivation for Action

Behind
the Swoosh: Sweatshops and Social Justice
This two-hour interactive multi-media presentation,
“Behind the Swoosh: Sweatshops and Social
Justice”, includes slide shows, role-playing,
powerful video footage, and a Question-Answer period.
The presentation details the month EFJ Directors,
Leslie Kretzu and Jim Keady spent in an Indonesian
factory workers' slum living on $1.25 a day, a typical
wage paid to Nike's subcontracted workers. More>
Popular Education and Grassroots Organizing:
Getting the Message into the Mainstream
A must for student organizers, this Traveling Classroom event details practical ways to raise awareness, educate and organize, spark further interest and dialogue, and develop concrete plans of action on social justice issues in your community. Drawing on their experience gained in EFJ’s Stop Nike Sweatshops campaign, Leslie Kretzu and Jim Keady break down the components necessary to conduct effective popular education and grassroots organizing. Catholic Social Teaching 101: Exploring a Best Kept Secret
Most Catholics, including high school and college students, have never heard of Catholic Social Teaching. This body of teaching, described by some Catholics as “the Church’s best kept secret”, includes the Church’s stance on issues of living wages, the right to form labor unions, concentration of wealth and power, global solidarity and more. This EFJ Traveling Classroom event is designed as a primer for students, introducing them to these issues that have been pushed to margins by a preference
for other issues of Catholic doctrine. More>
Liberation Theology: Speaking Truth from the Margins
With an ever-increasing divide between the rich and the poor (or the “have’s” and the “have-nots”), it is imperative that students re-examine the “theology of the margins” that gained so much attention in the 70’s and 80’s for its analysis of unjust social and economic structures. community or campus. Nonviolence in Theory and Practice
What does it mean to use “nonviolence” as a political force to raise consciousness and change unjust social structures? Using the examples of Martin Luther King & the Civil Rights Movement, Mohandas Gandhi & India’s independence movement, Archbishop Oscar Romero and the struggles of the Salvadoran people, as well as the teachings and actions of Jesus of Nazareth. Building in Good Faith: An Exposé on the PVC Industry
This EFJ Traveling Classroom event, conducted in collaboration with Working Films, is a presentation by award-winning documentary filmmaker Judith Helfand. Complete with a screening of her groundbreaking film, Blue Vinyl, a workshop/masterclass, and a Q&A session, Judith looks into the damage the PVC industry (Polyvinyl Chloride) is having on the environment. Over 14 billion pounds of PVC are currently produced every year in North America, 75 percent of which is used
in construction materials. More>

presentations depending on the needs of your class
or community. If your suggested topic is one that
EFJ does not currently cover, we will refer you
to speakers who can hopefully meet your needs. To
